QuickBooks Desktop Discontinued? What Changed in 2026 and What Staying Costs

That is good news if you are on Desktop and happy there. It removes the deadline. It doesn't change the rest: no new customers can buy Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Mac Plus, there is no newer version, and the renewal went up twice in 2026. If You're on Desktop 2023, This Already Happened

With the 2024 deadline gone, the one group that has actually lost service is easy to forget: QuickBooks Desktop 2023 — Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, and Enterprise 23.0 — lost all support on May 31, 2026. That date has already passed.

The software still opens. What stopped is everything in it that reaches outside your computer:

• Bank feeds disconnected — transactions no longer download on their own
• Payroll tax tables frozen — withholding is being calculated on rates that stopped updating in May
• Direct deposit blocked
• QuickBooks Payments halted — card payments taken through the file stop clearing
• Security patches ended permanently — on a file holding payroll records and bank credentials
• Intuit support closed for that version

If you have been reconciling by hand since early summer and assumed something was broken on your machine, this is why. Nothing is broken. The service was switched off on schedule.

If you still hold an active Desktop Plus subscription, Intuit's answer is to install 2024, which comes with the plan — and keep paying a renewal that is now $1,351 a year. If your subscription has lapsed, you cannot buy Pro Plus or Premier Plus again as a new U.S. customer; the only Desktop product still sold to new customers is Enterprise, which starts around $1,740 a year for a single user.

No QuickBooks Desktop 2025: Confirmed

For decades, Intuit released a new version of QuickBooks Desktop every year. QuickBooks 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024... users expected 2025 to follow.

It's not coming.

Instead of annual versions, Intuit is now releasing periodic updates to the 2024 version. They call these "R" updates (R9, R10, R11, etc.). But make no mistake: QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is the last major version.

What "No Sunset Date" Does and Doesn't Mean

For most of the last two years the fair complaint about Desktop was uncertainty: a published cutoff and no word on what came after. Intuit has now answered the first half. Credit where it's due — if you run Desktop 2024 and like it, you're not being pushed off a cliff in 2027.

So the planning question has moved. It used to be "how long can I stay?" Now it is "what will staying cost each year, and do I control that number?"

The business rationale is straightforward: cloud subscriptions are more profitable than desktop software.

• Recurring revenue: Monthly subscriptions provide predictable income. Desktop sales were often one-time purchases or annual renewals.
• Price flexibility: Cloud pricing can be increased easily. Desktop users could stick with older versions to avoid paying more.
• Lower support costs: One cloud version to maintain vs. multiple desktop versions across different years.
• Data lock-in: When your data is in their cloud, switching is harder.

From Intuit's perspective, moving everyone to QuickBooks Online makes perfect business sense. From your perspective as a customer, it means less choice and higher long-term costs.

February 2026: Intuit Raised Desktop Prices Anyway

Here is the part that reframes the whole decision. On February 1, 2026, Intuit put prices up across the Desktop range by roughly 10% — on a product line it had already stopped selling to new customers.

Read that again in order. The product has no 2025 version, no 2026 version, and is closed to new buyers — and the renewal price went up. You are being asked to pay $1,149 a year, more than last year, for software whose new features now go to the online product first.

Meanwhile QuickBooks Online, the destination Intuit is steering Desktop users toward, was repriced twice in 2026: on May 1 and again on August 1. Plus went from $90 to $110 to $140 a month — a 55% rise in eight months. Advanced went from $200 to $340, up 70%. So the migration path Intuit is recommending is not a stable price either.

October 1, 2026: Intuit Raises Desktop Prices a Second Time This Year

February was not the end of it. Intuit announced a further Desktop repricing in July 2026, and it applies to renewals dated on or after October 1, 2026. If your renewal lands after that date, the figures below are the invoice you are about to receive — the increase does not wait for a new version, because there is no new version.

Where these numbers come from, since it matters: Intuit notified the accounting channel in July 2026 and the tables were republished by QuickBooks consultancies; Intuit does not publish Desktop renewal prices on its own site. We checked them the only way available — every "before" figure above matches February's increase exactly. Enterprise editions were not itemised in what we could verify, so we are not quoting an Enterprise number for October.

Put the year end to end. A single-user Pro Plus renewal was $999 in January, $1,149 in February, and $1,351 from October — about 35% in one year. Now that Desktop 2024 has no end date, there is no deadline to wait out. You pay that renewal for as long as you stay, at whatever Intuit sets it to next year. A three-user Premier Plus firm goes from $2,299 to $2,703. Add Enhanced Payroll and you are past $3,500 a year.

What to do when the renewal notice arrives: check the renewal date on it rather than the amount — the date decides which price applies — and count your seats, because the per-user figure moved further in percentage terms than the base did. Multiply the renewal by the years you expect to stay, then compare it with the cost of moving once.

Your Options as a Desktop User

If you're currently using QuickBooks Desktop, here's what you need to consider:

Option 1: Stay on Desktop 2024

Since August 2026 this is a real long-term option, not a stopgap, and for some businesses it is the right one.

Pros:

• No change required, and no support deadline now
• Familiar interface and workflows
• Payroll, bank feeds and security updates continue while you keep renewing

Cons:

• Renewal is $1,351 a year from October 2026 and rose 35% in 2026. You don't control the next number
• No new version; development effort goes to QuickBooks Online
• Let the subscription lapse and you can't buy Pro Plus or Premier Plus again
• Every year you stay adds another year of history to move if you leave later

Option 2: Upgrade to QuickBooks Enterprise

Enterprise is the one Desktop product Intuit is keeping alive. They've explicitly stated Enterprise will continue to be sold and supported.
