The short answer. If you want to stay on the desktop, Sage 50 is the most established replacement, AccountEdge is the cheapest established one, and BizBooks Pro (ours) is the one that brings your full transaction history across at $299 a year. If you're ready for the cloud, QuickBooks Online is the easiest move and Xero suits teams that need many users. Staying on QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is still possible: there is no shutdown date, but Pro Plus now renews at $1,351 a year.
The difference most comparisons leave out is how much of your history makes the trip. That varies from "all of it" to "your customer list", and it's the part you can't fix later.
Where QuickBooks Desktop stands today
- No new sales of Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Mac Plus since September 30, 2024. Enterprise is the only Desktop product Intuit still sells to new customers, from about $1,740 a year for one user.
- No shutdown date for Desktop 2024. In August 2026 Intuit withdrew the planned May 2027 cutoff. If you have 2024 and keep renewing, it keeps working.
- The renewal is the real decision. Single-user Pro Plus went from $999 in January 2026 to $1,149 in February and $1,351 from October 1, about 35% in one year. Premier Plus is $1,891.
So the question isn't "what do I do before QuickBooks Desktop stops working?" It's "is the renewal still worth it, and if not, what do I lose by leaving?" Our QuickBooks Desktop status page keeps the dates and sources current.
The comparison
Prices are for one user, as published or reported in October 2026. "History" means posted transactions from past years, not just your lists and opening balances.
| Option | Runs on | One user, per year | Your QuickBooks Desktop history | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stay with Intuit | ||||
| QuickBooks Desktop 2024 | Windows | $1,351 (Pro Plus renewal) | All of it; nothing moves | Renewal rose 35% in 2026; existing subscribers only |
| QuickBooks Enterprise | Windows | From ~$1,740 | All of it (Intuit's own upgrade path) | The most expensive route by far |
| QuickBooks Online | Cloud | From $38/mo; Plus $140/mo | Posted transactions convert; budgets, memorized transactions, templates, sales orders, estimates, payroll records, projects and attachments don't | The import must run within 60 days of opening the account; audit trail starts fresh |
| Stay on the desktop | ||||
| Sage 50 | Windows | From ~$875 (Pro); Premium $988.80 | Migration help for most QuickBooks versions; confirm your version and data first | Auto-renewing subscription; steeper learning curve |
| AccountEdge | Windows, Mac | From $20/mo (~$240) | Its IIF tool imports lists, not transactions; history needs a paid conversion | Without a conversion you start from opening balances |
| BizBooks Pro (ours) | Windows | $299; rate locked 12 years | Every year: lists from an IIF export, transactions from a QuickBooks report. Free done-for-you migration that shows it ties out | Windows only; no built-in payroll; newer, smaller company |
| GnuCash | Windows, Mac, Linux | Free | No QuickBooks importer; QIF, OFX or CSV only | Built for technical users; no invoicing workflow like QuickBooks |
| Move to another cloud product | ||||
| Xero | Cloud | From $27/mo | Free Jet Convert covers the current and prior fiscal year | Older years need a paid conversion or a fresh start; no US payroll built in |
| Zoho Books | Cloud | Free plan; Standard $20/mo | Imports through CSV templates; no QuickBooks Desktop file converter we could confirm | Full history means a staged, manual import |
The question most comparisons skip: how much history comes with you
Every product on this list can import your customers, vendors and chart of accounts. That part is easy and almost every comparison stops there. The hard part is the years of posted transactions: the invoices, bills and journal entries behind every past report. They're what you need when the IRS asks about 2022, when a lender wants three years of statements, or when you want to see last March's sales against this March's.
There are roughly three outcomes:
- Full history. Every past year comes across and the old reports can be re-run. QuickBooks Enterprise (it's the same data) and QuickBooks Online (for posted transactions, within its 60-day window) do this. So does BizBooks Pro.
- Recent history. One or two years, with older ones left behind or sold as an extra. Xero's free conversion is in this group.
- Lists and opening balances. You start on a date with your balances, and the past stays in QuickBooks. AccountEdge's built-in tool and most CSV routes land here unless you pay for a conversion.
A clean start on opening balances is a perfectly good choice for many businesses, and accountants often recommend it. Just make it a choice, and keep a way to open the old file. If you let the QuickBooks subscription lapse with no copy of your history anywhere else, the past can become hard to reach.
Each option, briefly
Stay on QuickBooks Desktop 2024
If Desktop works for you and the renewal fits the budget, staying is a legitimate answer, and since August 2026 it no longer comes with a deadline. You keep everything: workflows, add-ons, your accountant's familiarity. What you give up is control of the price, which rose 35% in 2026 alone.
Best for: businesses deeply tied to Desktop add-ons or Intuit payroll, where $1,351+ a year is a small cost next to switching.
Sage 50
The closest like-for-like replacement and the most established. It's a mature Windows program with strong reporting, inventory and job costing, a payroll add-on that files, phone support, and a large network of certified consultants. Fit Small Business ranks it the best overall QuickBooks Desktop alternative. The trade-offs are price, a dated feel, and a subscription that auto-renews at whatever Sage sets next year.
Best for: established businesses that want desktop software with a long track record and payroll in the same product.
AccountEdge
A long-standing desktop program (the MYOB lineage) covering bookkeeping, sales, purchasing, inventory and reporting at a modest price, and one of the few that also runs on a Mac. The catch for a QuickBooks user is migration: AccountEdge's own documentation says its IIF import tool brings over lists, not transactions, so you either start from opening balances or pay for a conversion.
Best for: small businesses, including Mac users, happy to start fresh from opening balances.
BizBooks Pro (ours)
GAAP double-entry accounting that installs on a Windows PC and keeps the company data on that machine. We built it for QuickBooks Desktop users: it imports your lists from an IIF export and every year of transactions from a QuickBooks transaction report, and on any paid plan we'll do that migration for you free and show you the balances tie out to your QuickBooks reports before you pay. Every plan covers bank feeds (US and Canadian banks), reconciliation, invoicing, bills, inventory, multi-currency and full financial statements; Professional adds job costing, fixed assets and advanced reports.
The honest limits: it's Windows only, it has no built-in payroll, it has no app marketplace like QuickBooks or Xero, and we're a newer, smaller company than anyone else on this list. If you're not ready to switch at all, the free Desktop History Archive keeps your QuickBooks years readable on your own PC with no subscription.
Best for: Desktop users who want to stay on the desktop, keep every year of history, and stop paying $1,351+ a year.
GnuCash
Real double-entry accounting at no cost, and it's been around for over two decades. It's built for people comfortable setting things up themselves: there's no QuickBooks importer and the invoicing and payables workflows are basic by QuickBooks standards.
Best for: very small or personal books where cost matters most and someone technical keeps them.
QuickBooks Online
The lowest-friction move, because Intuit runs the conversion and the screens will feel familiar. Posted transaction history comes across. Intuit's own documentation lists what doesn't: budgets, memorized transactions, invoice templates, sales orders, estimates, payroll records, projects and attachments. The conversion must run within 60 days of opening the account, and some Desktop features (advanced inventory, job costing) need the higher tiers. See what QuickBooks doesn't bring with you for the detail.
Best for: businesses ready for the cloud that want to stay in the Intuit ecosystem and its integrations.
Xero
A polished cloud ledger with unlimited users on every plan, strong bank reconciliation and a large app marketplace. Xero's free Jet Convert tool moves the current and prior fiscal year from QuickBooks Desktop; older years need a paid conversion or a fresh start. US payroll runs through partners such as Gusto rather than inside Xero.
Best for: growing teams that want many users in the cloud and can leave older years behind.
Zoho Books
The lowest-cost cloud option with real features, and a good fit if you already use other Zoho apps. Migration from QuickBooks Desktop runs through Zoho's CSV import templates, one data type at a time; we couldn't confirm a direct Desktop file converter, so bringing years of history means a staged, manual project.
Best for: cost-conscious businesses moving to the cloud with a fresh start.
How to choose in three questions
- Desktop or cloud? If you want your books on your own PC, your shortlist is QuickBooks Desktop/Enterprise, Sage 50, AccountEdge, BizBooks Pro and GnuCash.
- How many years do you need to keep working with? If the answer is "all of them", check the history column before anything else. A fresh start is fine, but only if you choose it.
- What do you need inside the accounting program? If US payroll must live in the same product, that points to QuickBooks or Sage 50. If you need Mac, AccountEdge or a cloud product.

What is the best alternative to QuickBooks Desktop in 2026?
If you want to stay on the desktop: Sage 50 is the established choice, AccountEdge the cheapest established one, and BizBooks Pro the one that brings your full transaction history across at $299 a year. If you'll move to the cloud: QuickBooks Online is the easiest move and Xero suits teams that need many users.
Which alternatives can import my full QuickBooks Desktop history?
QuickBooks Online (posted transactions, within 60 days, with documented exclusions) and BizBooks Pro (every year, from an IIF export and a transaction report). Xero's free tool covers two fiscal years. AccountEdge's built-in tool and Zoho's CSV templates start you from lists and opening balances unless you pay for, or build, a fuller import.
Can I keep using QuickBooks Desktop?
Yes, on Desktop 2024, for as long as you renew. Intuit withdrew the 2027 cutoff in August 2026. The renewal is $1,351 a year for single-user Pro Plus from October 2026.
How do I keep my old QuickBooks files readable if I stop paying?
Before the subscription lapses, export your lists and reports and keep PDF copies of each year's statements, or import the history into a program that can show it read-only. Our free Desktop History Archive does the latter on your own PC with no expiry.
